Pixar lays off 75 employees after ‘Buzz Lightyear’ flop

Date: April 19, 2024 Time: 18:34:37

Pixar has fired 75 employees over the box office flop of Buzz Lightyear, Reuters reported, citing sources. This is the company’s first mass layoff since 2013. Reuters writes about it.

Pixar has removed Buzz Lightyear director Angus McLain, president of global marketing Michael Agulnek and veteran producer Galin Zusman. The cartoon, created for 200 million dollars, collected only 226.7 million at the box office. “Buzz Lightyear” failed to reach the box office in 14 countries in the Middle East and Asia due to its demonstration of same-sex relationships.

Buzz Lightyear, among others, was a failed project that brought the biggest losses in 2022. Deadline wrote that die-hard fans weren’t thrilled that Chris Evans was voicing the character instead of Tim Allen.

Earlier, Pixar released a new excerpt from the cartoon about the “Elemental” elements. In the video, the main characters demonstrate their skills against each other. We talk about it in more detail here.
