According to the FPA, the competition jury evaluated the actual speeches of the lawyers participating in the competition. In turn, the lawyer interns wrote an essay on the topic “Lawyer: in the service of law and justice.” The President of the FPA of the Russian Federation, Svetlana Volodina, noted that the main task of the competition was to show that lawyers have become interested in judicial speeches again. She said that according to the results of the contest, a “Collection of Speeches” will be published, which will include texts not only from the winners, but also from those who came in fourth place. Svetlana Volodina expressed the hope that such contests will be held more often and regular collections of lawyers’ speeches will appear.
The contest was held jointly with the Department of Defense of the Moscow State Law University named after OE Kutafin and was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of prominent Soviet and Russian lawyer SL Arias (1922-2013).
Svetlana Volodina said that, according to the terms of the competition, the participants indicated the outcome of the case, where the court speech was made, but it did not matter for the assessment whether the verdict was acquittal or the punishment was less than required. As a striking example, the AFP president cited the speech of Semyon Lvovich Aria, delivered by him in 1966 in the case of Viktor Raskin, who was shot. This speech was recognized as the best judicial speech of the 20th century.
The president of the FPA RF also said that one of the main evaluation criteria was the persuasiveness of the court speech. Svetlana Volodina paid special attention to the design of the text. “Of course, every lawyer writes a speech with a red line, paragraphs, but not everyone pays attention to the structure of the text: highlighting the main idea, using different fonts. And there were several such works among the works that participated in the competition. The jury also evaluated whether the correct position of the legal defense was chosen. And then we looked at how this position is proven and how the state prosecutor’s position is refuted,” he said.
The FPA president also noted that there were many talented interns among the contestants. “I am glad that a new generation is coming, which argues and appeals with interesting facts, events and argues its speech,” said Svetlana Volodina.
