Remote electrical self-consumption can reduce the electricity bill by up to 70%

Date: February 26, 2024 Time: 21:24:37

A person who lives in an apartment in Barcelona or who runs a commercial premises can contract their own solar panels installed in Murcia and recovered from the energy they produce for 30 years (years of useful life of the panels). It looks like magic, but it’s not. At Comunidad Solar they have designed an electricity supply model based on remote self-consumption with the aim that anyone can own energy from renewable sources, regardless of whether they live in areas with few hours of sun or in a home that is not suitable for ta to install solar panels.

Eugenio García-Calderón, co-founder of Comunidad Solar, explains to La Información that the company, through its electricity supplier, feeds the energy generated by the solar panels they have in Murcia into the electricity grid at market price. “We supply your residence or premises with the same amount that they have generated at a price of zero euros. This is a service created for the people, so Comunidad Solar does not obtain any benefit from the sale of energy or from the marketing service of energy The users of our remote self-consumption can continue consuming energy from the electricity grid in the same way they did up to now, but saving money and contributing to the production of clean energy”, he assures.

In this sense, remote self-consumption has been designed so that any family or small business can cover 100% of its energy consumption at zero euros with the green energy produced by solar panels. Thus, they can save up to 70% of their electricity bill, which is the percentage corresponding to the cost of energy in a bill in Spain. The rest corresponds to toll costs, distribution and regulated costs. On the other hand, in the event that the solar panels of the remote self-consumption user produce more energy per hour than they consume in their home or premises, they will accumulate the value of the surplus at market price in order to further reduce their future bills.

30 euro bill

A family with a monthly bill of 95 euros (65 euros for energy + 30 euros for taxes and expenses) would need to hire 4 energy mixes to reduce their bill to 30 euros.

García-Calderón says that Comunidad Solar is in its first phase and that it has more than 200 clients. Founded in 2018, it is supported by partners such as Circle Energy, Generali, Mapfre, Plus Ultra, BBVA and BNP Paribas, and aims to serve a large remote energy community reaching 400,000 members in five years. In the same period of time, it expects to reach one gigawatt (GW) of renewable power. Currently, it has three facilities in Fuente Álamo, in Murcia, which in total have more than 6,000 solar panels and 3.2 MW megawatts (MW) of power. To these we must add a hydraulic power station in Palencia.

“These installations are only the beginning and we are already in the process of expanding with the acquisition of new solar parks in favorable places for the generation of solar energy such as Menorca and Talavera de la Reina”, advances García-Calderón. The question is how much to invest. According to the manager, the average investment is around 5,900 euros when buying five remote solar panels: each unit of energy ‘mix’ is priced at 1,199 euros and generates around 92.1 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month. For its part, the recovery time of the investment is approximately seven years, taking into account the average price of energy in the last two years.

External trading companies

At Comunidad Solar they do not have accredited agreements with external marketers, but instead operate the service through their own company, which is given to Red Eléctrica de España and the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE). The retailer’s service does not imply any additional cost for customers, it is only a necessary means for them to bill their energy consumption data. “The contracting process is simple and is done online. First, we calculate the usual energy consumption of the house or premises to which the service is to be associated and we make a recommendation of the quantities of energy ‘mix’ units that would be needed to cover it”, indicates the co-founder of the company.

Subsequently, the user chooses how many energy ‘mixes’ he wants to contract and must switch to the Comunidad Solar electricity supplier in order to access the service and start saving on his electricity bill.
