Renfe begins tests to operate the AVE in France after the divorce from SNCF

Date: March 29, 2024 Time: 21:16:21

After the ‘divorce’ of SNCF, the Spanish railway company Renfe has given the go-ahead this Monday to the tests of its AVE trains that will run between Spain and France. The company will start its high-speed service in the neighboring country before summer with the Barcelona-Lyon and Madrid-Marseille routes.

This first route has started from Barcelona Sants with intermediate stops in Girona, Figueres-Vilafant, Perpinyà, Narbonne, Montpellier, Nimes, Valence and has arrived in Lyon at noon. The tests started this Monday are known in railway slang as ‘blank marches’ and consist of reproducing the characteristics of the commerce service to demonstrate the solvency of the operation.

The operations center will be located in Barcelona and, in order to start the service, Renfe already has the first qualified train drivers and the rest, until they have the optimal staff, will do so in the coming weeks. The intervention personnel have also received the necessary training and authorization.

Renfe has already received the safety certificate for the routes from Perpinya to Lyon and Marseille and the company plans to define a progressive transport plan until reaching 28 weekly circulations. Renfe aims to launch these new AVE services before the summer, after the French operator SNCF broke the agreement they had to operate routes between the two countries.

The Spanish company has also started the procedures to open a branch in France, with which it continues to work to obtain the security certificate to operate throughout France. Renfe has assured that the domestic market “has not suffered” with the decision of SNCF.
