Within the framework of Fitur 2023, the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda has announced that Renfe plans to launch a total of 253 tourist trains of different content in 2023, which represents an increase of 30% compared to what was produced in 2022, the year in which 170 trains with tourist content traveled the Spanish tracks, in which 23,597 customers traveled.
These trains will travel through different autonomous communities. The greatest increase in trips will occur in the segment of luxury tourist trains Transcantábrico, Al Andalus, Costa Verde Express and Expreso de la Robla, which according to forecasts will make a total of 96 trips, 57% more than the 61 trips that It was carried out in 2022 and had an occupation of 2,157 travelers.
Likewise, in relation to thematic trains, according to Renfe forecasts, these trains will carry out 87 circulations, which represents an increase of 52% compared to 2022, when 57 thematic tourism trains circulated with an occupation of 4,677 passengers. Thematic tourism trains carry out day trips with cultural and gastronomic content. The tourist routes that are launched every summer in Galicia stand out, to which two new ones will be incorporated in the 2023 edition, the ‘Ruta de las Camellias’ and the ‘Mega Experience Route and A Coruña 1906’.
In the context of thematic tourism trains, Renfe has signed in Fitur agreements of intent that involve new routes. Thus, with the Junta de Castilla la Mancha, which establishes a travel calendar to various destinations in Albacete, Cuenca, Talavera de la Reina or Guadalajara. Also in Extremadura, a series of trains will be launched that will carry out up to five tourist routes throughout the year, according to the agreement reached between Renfe and the Board of this autonomous community.
In addition, Barcelona Provincial Council, in its interest to publicize
the province has reached an agreement of intent with Renfe to program, starting next spring, thematic routes that
develop tourism throughout the province, counting on the train as the best ally to get to know its gastronomy, thermalism or modernism, which, in addition to being allowed in the capital, at the beginning of the 20th century was implemented in multiple Barcelona towns.
As a complement to the luxury and thematic segments, Renfe manages tourist trains with the generic name of historic, such as the Strawberry or Christmas trains, which according to the company’s forecasts in 2023 will carry out 52 circulations, a number similar to that It was launched in 2022, which had an occupation of 17,377 travelers.
