Renfe will invest 3.5 million euros in a security service with drones

Date: March 19, 2024 Time: 08:35:26

The Renfe company continues to make progress in achieving objectives within its Strategic Plan, on this occasion the company announced this Monday that it will hire a team of security drones, through a tender with an investment of 3.5 million euros, to avoid actions that can cause risks to users, assets or company personnel and allow the identification of the authors of these, it reported this Monday in a statement.

The contract contemplates the performance of 76,720 flight hours, with a service that will be provided through Air Mobile Units (UMAS) and that will operate throughout the national territory. This new security system, which will complement the current one, will have cameras with permanent recording that will allow adequate detection of the different risk circumstances.

It will also serve to identify people and vehicle registration plates, in any visibility condition, since in case of poor lighting conditions, the teams will have thermal cameras, as indicated in the statement. The UMAS will be operated by drone pilots who will be, in turn, security guards, who will have all the necessary equipment for their operation.

This new security service, promoted by Renfe’s Corporate Security area, is designed to allow operation close to residential areas, through the use of low-acoustic emission drones. Renfe has already carried out several pilot tests with drones, the results of which have been “satisfactory”. The use of drones for security is part of the objectives of the company’s Strategic Plan.
