Retirement can activate improved: requirements and which doctors to request it

Date: May 30, 2024 Time: 22:03:32

The Council of Ministers has approved the enhanced active retirement for family doctors and primary care paediatricians who are attached to the national health system, either by statutory appointment or as civil servants. Specifically, this new model will be accessible to those who have retired as of January 1, 2022 or who have previously accepted the compatibility of the same type included in the standard approved in May 2021 due to the coronavirus emergency.

In addition, other conditions were established, such as not having accessed retirement before the stipulated age (so those who have agreed to early retirement are excluded) or exercising their professional work only in the public sector, where they must be given registration and discharge in the same terms as any other worker, although a legal level will be considered a pensioner for all purposes.

How does Enhanced Active Retirement work?

Sanitary workers will be able to access a full or part-time job, provided that the reduction in working hours is 50%, while they enjoy this improved active retirement and obtain 75% of their pension. This amount will be calculated from the amount initially set when it expired and taking into account the maximum pension limit, if applicable.

During the time that retirement is compatible with active working life, they will be entitled to pension supplements below the minimum if they meet the requirements established for it. Without the salary they receive interfering in it. The supplement for delay of the retirement pension is also compatible, without the amount received decreasing, either.

Response to the shortage of doctors

Doctors will be able to take advantage of this retirement model for the next three years to respond to the lack of doctors in the National Health System. The Government has considered it urgent to react to the “pressing shortage” according to the royal decree where this retirement is included and has done so by introducing a transitional provision to the General Social Security Law to make it compatible.

Physicians will be protected against common and professional contingencies, like the rest of the employees, for which incompatibilities and the exercise of the right to option apply. Likewise, no minimum contribution period will be necessary to access a temporary disability subsidy for a common illness.
