Russia will create a card for non-cash payments from foreigners

Date: February 3, 2023 Time: 13:17:40

The Ministry of Economic Development is going to create a “tourist card” for non-cash payments from foreign citizens in Russia. This will help increase the tourist flow to the country. This was stated by the head of the department Maxim Reshetnikov, writes RIA Novosti.

On December 15, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko ordered to create a “tourist card” that will work in the Mir payment system. The Ministry of Economic Development, the Bank of Russia, the Ministry of Digital Finance, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and several other departments have announced the curators of the project.

After the start of the Russian special operation on the territory of Ukraine, Visa and Mastercard stopped servicing Russian cards. They are no longer accepted for payments abroad and in foreign online stores and online services.

Due to the departure of these payment systems, foreigners in Russia can now only pay in cash. This situation creates two problems: the impossibility of withdrawing money from the card for impulse purchases, which “for many will exclude purchases as an element of tourism”, and the unfavorable exchange rate of the ruble for foreign currencies.

It was previously reported that Russians leaving the country would be banned from self-employment. In addition, individual entrepreneurs will increase taxes. Read more here.
