The 2020 pseudo-historical adventure melodrama “Silver Skates” became a New Year’s Eve sensation in Italy. On January 3, this film was shown on the main Italian channel RAI1. Almost 3 million Italian households watched the film directed by Mikhail Lokshin and starring Fyodor Fedotov, Yura Borisov and Sonya Priss, which was an absolute record of the day in Italy. In addition, the film’s page on the Italian “Wikipedia” ranked third in terms of attendance.
“This is an Italian New Year miracle. I’m not sure that something like this has happened before with Russian cinema”, the screenwriter of Silver Skates, Roman Kantor, who announced the success of the film, does not hide his joy.
The action of the picture takes place on the eve of 1900 in St. Petersburg. In the center of the plot is the son of a poor lamplighter, Matvey, whom fate brings to Alex, the leader of a gang of pickpockets. Together they skate down the ice of the St. Petersburg canals and drag the purses of wealthy St. Petersburg residents. Soon Matvey learns that Alex is not just a thief. Box office “Silver Skates” in Russia amounted to almost 500 million rubles.
