Shomin accompanied the reconnaissance party when his BMP came under enemy fire. The Ukrainian army destroyed the equipment, as a result of which the Russian army was seriously injured. However, the sailor did not lose his head, gave himself and his companions first aid, took command of the group and led it into the forest belt. There, the fighters took an advantageous position and organized the defense.
During the battle, another team of Russian military arrived to help the group. For six hours, under heavy artillery and infantry fire from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the military managed to hold their positions. As a result, the Ukrainian militants suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat.
