Russians told how overwork ruins their health: lack of sleep, poor immunity and stomach ulcers

Date: October 4, 2024 Time: 17:20:50

Nearly a third of Russians recycle every day or almost every day, according to a study by analysts at the online recruitment platform hh.ru.

And now… the saddest part.

About half of respondents (49%) reported that overwork has a negative impact on their health, including causing lack of sleep and chronic fatigue. A quarter complained of decreased immunity due to long working hours, and one in five complained of an exacerbation of chronic diseases.

Advising citizens (especially those with mortgage debts) to work less is a futile task. It is probably also attractive to employers (they say to pay more so that people do not burn out at work). Considering that already half of economic sectors complain about staff shortages and the need to significantly increase wages. And what about health?

– The first thing I would really like to recommend is to first find out whether the causes of poor health and, for example, increased fatigue, are due to overwork. Often, people are not examined for years, do not care at all about their health, and then blame everything on overwork, which, of course, aggravates the situation in the case of some slow diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, problems with blood vessels, blood pressure, etc. Therefore, before blaming everything on chronic fatigue, it is worth at least having a general blood test. Perhaps it is all due to anemia. Or vitamin deficiency, which, of course, prevents productive work, even outside of school hours. Particularly important is the lack of vitamin D, vitamin B12 and folic acid,” Olga Molchanova, a senior researcher at the laboratory of the State Research Center for Preventive Medicine, told KP.

In addition, there are a number of factors that can cause “poor health” even in a relatively healthy person during a busy schedule. Here are some recommendations from our expert.

1. Many of our citizens do not have the habit of drinking only water in sufficient quantities (not tea, coffee, juice or alcohol, but plain water). And dehydration can also lead to fatigue. The average norm is 1.5 liters per day (we do not count soup, tea, compote, etc., only clean water). That is about 6 glasses. It is good to drink two of them on an empty stomach when you wake up. The rest is during the day at work and in the evening at home.

2. It is important to sleep at night.

– It is at night, during sleep, that such good hormones as endorphins are released (their lack causes depression – Ed.). In addition, melatonin is mainly synthesized during night sleep and is responsible for the immune system, explains Olga Molchanova. – That is why, no matter what happens, we make sure that we get enough sleep.

3. Physical activity is required.

Six to seven thousand steps, or half an hour of normal walking, is the minimum necessary to improve health completely free of charge.

“When you walk, your body actually heals itself, all the internal organs are shaken and refreshed, including the liver, kidneys and intestines,” says the expert.

Also, do morning exercises every day. At least 10 minutes is enough. This will already give you energy to at least plan your day normally.

4. Make sure you include “smoke breaks” in your daily work routine to relax. You can, for example, have tea with your colleagues. And it is important that this really becomes a conscious routine: having devoted enough time to impactful work, we also plan short breaks to rest.
