Pedro Sanchez and Olaf Scholz will chair a bilateral meeting between Spain and Germany on October 5th and 6th in La Coruña. This will be the first-ever bilateral summit between both countries since they met seven years ago without concluding. In recent months, the governments of both countries have gotten into gear to come to an agreement on when the meeting should take place.
The summit will take place in A Coruña, which is the capital of Galicia. After the meeting in August 2014, it was decided that Santiago de Compostela would host them, but this time they will arrive by plane and return to Galicia after their meeting in Spain. The main part of the agenda for October 5 is Wednesday, but this will last until Friday when Scholz and Sanchez leave to attend an informal meeting of the leaders and government of the EU in Prague.
An agenda for the Council of Europe summit will include various topics, such as international relations, challenges facing the European continent, and challenges facing the two countries in light of the effects of the war in Ukraine.
Germany’s Chancellor, Angela Merkel, will visit Spain and France in order to discuss the energy crisis. Prior to her trip, Sanchez already visited Germany and promoted a gas connection with France via the Pyrenees. Macron remains opposed to this project, but he won’t have much more chance from now on until the situation is settled.
