What is happening with the weather? What are the causes of climate change? How are they related to solar activity?
Scientists from leading research institutes tried to find answers to all these questions within the framework of the meeting “Development of the concept of integrated studies of changes in the Earth’s climate system, taking into account heliogeophysical factors.” It was carried out at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Scientists from Moscow, Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg also participated in the discussion.
The scientific director of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Geliy Zherebtsov explained why the interaction of representatives of different scientific disciplines studying the cause of climate change is so important: “It is impossible to deny the influence of solar energy. activity on climate change on Earth. All processes in the ocean, in the Earth’s lower atmosphere and in space are associated with solar activity, but these processes are mediated, it is not easy to reveal their mechanisms.” Therefore, the academic urged, it is necessary to organize the I work in such a way that common ground is found between the traditional interests of the institute, which studies the physics of the Sun and the influence of solar activity on the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere, and the interests of those who study the lower atmosphere and the oceans.
“We want to understand,” said Geliy Zherebtsov, “whether we can establish a relationship between changes in the lower atmosphere, taking into account the heliogeophysical factors that we observe. In addition, there is another important question: how does climate change affect terrestrial space, because it is obvious that processes go not only from the Sun to the Earth, but also in the opposite direction.
Roman Vasiliev, head of the laboratory for physics of the lower and middle atmosphere at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics, noted that the meeting participants not only listened and discussed the reports, but also had the opportunity to exchange results and agree on new research. .
As a result of the meeting, it was decided to start work on the organization of a joint laboratory, the purpose of which will be to study climate change on Earth, taking into account heliogeophysical factors. And in a year in Irkutsk to hold a conference on this topic at the invitation of all interested experts.
