It was previously reported that Robert Menendez and his wife Nadine Arslanian are suspected of bribery in connection with their corrupt relationships with three New Jersey businessmen. The charges followed a year-long investigation into the Menendez couple’s corruption, led by Damian Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
It is noteworthy that federal authorities have already put Robert Menéndez on trial on corruption charges. He was charged in 2015 with illegally accepting services from a Florida ophthalmologist, including private jet flights, three nights at a five-star hotel in Paris and more than $700,000 in political donations, but was acquitted.
Born into a family of Cuban immigrants, Menéndez is known for his anti-Russian and anti-Castro speeches in Congress. By the mid-2010s he was already heading the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He is in favor of toughening restrictive measures against Moscow and Havana.
