Sener and BlueFloat back down with the Almería offshore wind farm

Date: April 2, 2023 Time: 08:46:28

BlueFloat Energy and Sener Renewable have informed this Wednesday that they are going to put an end to their initiative to carry out the ‘Mar de Ágata’ project, with which they were going to build a floating offshore wind farm that both companies were trying to promote within the Levant in the Almeria province.

As reported in a note, this decision was made after the Royal Decree by which the Government eliminated the area (Maritime Space Management Plans) from its POEM (Maritime Space Management Plans) was published in the Official State Gazette (BOE). ZAPER) LEBA-1, despite the fact that this was “initially designated” by the Ministry as an “area of high potential for offshore wind energy.”

The promoters regret this decision “based mainly on minimizing the potential impact” on trawling over other “environmental and socioeconomic considerations”, which, in the understanding of both companies, will mean for the whole province of Almería a “damage to economic, social and energy development” compared to other neighboring Andalusian coastal provinces, such as Granada or Malaga.

They have said that ‘Mar de Ágata’ defended the need to eliminate the area. However, these premises were not enough for the Government to finish approving this project that has created so much controversy.

“With the total elimination of the LEBA-1 zone, Almería loses the opportunity to have the only renewable generation source that could replace the capacity left by the Carboneras thermal power plant without occupying areas of the terrestrial and marine Natural Park,” they assert.

This announcement has occurred in the middle of the growth stage of wind power, since large companies are betting on investing in Spanish areas that show quite striking potential in areas such as the Canary Islands, which already has a railway project with 195.
