For the filming of the film, a unique setting was built: Khitrovka, an Indian temple and even the Neglinka underground river.
– The task was not easy, but our production designer Sergei Fevralev coped with it brilliantly, – said Shakhnazarov. – Before that, I made serious films, sometimes they are thrown under a train, sometimes they die in tanks, but here I wanted the viewer to rest.
The plot of the film revolves around the characters of Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vladimir Gilyarovsky. The action takes place in Moscow in 1902. The famous director, in search of inspiration for the staging of a new play, decides to get acquainted with the life of the city “below”, for which he turns to the renowned expert on slums Gilyarovsky.
Once in the legendary bandit Khitrovka, the heroes become participants in the investigation of the murder of a mysterious local resident – an Indian Sikh with a dark past.
