The statement said that the upcoming voyage of ships and support vessels of the Northern Fleet to the Arctic will be carried out as part of measures aimed at ensuring the protection of Russia’s interests in the Arctic.
“The voyage is planned to last about two months and will pass through the seas of the Arctic Ocean, including areas of the Northern Sea Route,” the statement said.
The detachment included the large anti-submarine ship Vice-Admiral Kulakov, the large landing ship Alexander Otrakovsky, as well as the rescue tug Altai and the tanker Sergei Osipov.
As part of the voyage, the ships will conduct a series of exercises to ensure the safety of maritime navigation in the Arctic, as well as to defend Russia’s island and continental territories.
In particular, the crews will carry out rocket and artillery firing and practice amphibious landings on unequipped shores. In total, about 20 tactical exercises are planned.
The press service noted that this is the 13th consecutive voyage of the Arctic group of the Northern Fleet.
The Pentagon previously presented an updated US strategy for the Arctic. Washington has now declared the northern latitudes to be a “region of strategic confrontation” with the Russian Federation.
