Spain received 71.6 million tourists in 2022, at the gates of the pre-covid level

Date: March 27, 2023 Time: 06:11:45

Spain was left last year on the verge of recovering the figures prior to the outbreak of the Covid pandemic. In total, 71.6 million international travelers arrived in the country, 129.5% more than in 2021, although the data is still 14.3% below the records of 2019, the year for the sector both in volume of records and in spending. The latter, spending, shot up almost 150% in 2022 in relation to the previous year to 87,061 million euros, just 5% below the figures prior to the health problems. The data is striking in a year marked by the energy and inflationary crises and also hit by the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

According to the figures published this Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the United Kingdom once again regained strength as the main country that sends international tourists to Spain. That of British residents shot up 251.3% (exceeded 15.11 million travelers), that of tourists from France did so by 73.3% (there were almost 10.1 million) and that of those who came from Germany increased by 87.4% to 9.76 million visitors. Catalonia was the main autonomous community of destination last year, since it received almost 21% of the tourists who visited the country (a total of 14.8 million). Behind are Illes Balears (with 18.5% and 13.2 million travelers) and Canarias (17.2% and 12.32 million travelers).

Almost six out of every ten tourists who visited us arrived in Spain through the airport network. This is still the main access road. Nearly 11.0 million travelers arrived by road, 71.8% more than in 2021 for rent… Those who are not from the market were chosen by 12 million visitors.
