WHAT IS SQUALANE?
Before we define squalane, let’s talk about its relative, squalane. Squalene is produced by our sebaceous glands, this substance is part of the lipid layer of the skin, protects the skin from dryness and helps the normal exfoliation process. With age, squalene production decreases, leading to dryness, sensitivity, wrinkles, and even hyperkeratosis (a condition in which the skin’s stratum corneum becomes thicker and rougher).
Squalane is a lipid derived from squalene. This substance is used in cosmetics. Previously, squalane, rich in antioxidants, vitamin E and beta-carotene, was obtained from shark liver. Modern sources are vegetable oils: olive, palm, rice bran, amaranth seed.
WHO NEEDS SQUALANE COSMETICS AND WHY
