Stavropol scientists have found chemical compounds for the treatment of aggressive forms of cancer – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The scientific project, supported by the Russian Science Foundation, lasts three years and is being carried out by Stavropol University in collaboration with scientists from the Department of Chemistry and Biology at Texas State University.

The activity of the resulting compounds has been tested against the most aggressive forms of cancer.

– Scientists at our university are synthesizing new chemical compounds with promising pharmaceutical properties. In the future, they may be developed into drugs that have antiviral and anticancer properties and can treat diabetes and malaria. The efforts of the School of Scientific Chemistry of Stavropol University for many years have been focused on the search for compounds for the treatment of cancer, and research is carried out with leading scientists from other countries, says Dmitry Bespalov, rector of Stavropol University.

Cancer is considered one of the most common diseases that cause death. According to the World Health Organization, in 2022, more than 20 million people will be diagnosed with this diagnosis worldwide, including 9.7 million cases of cancer as a cause of death. This high mortality rate is partly explained by the lack of effective chemotherapy drugs on the market and the high degree of adaptation of cancer cells to the therapy. The need for anticancer agents with improved pharmacological profiles is constantly growing.

Currently, aggressive and advanced forms of cancer are treated with highly toxic chemicals. Furthermore, some of them cannot be used, for example, to treat brain tumors.

Scientists are also busy searching not only for chemical compounds that destroy or inactivate cancer cells, but also “transform” cancer cells into healthy cells. An international scientific team has synthesized three classes of compounds with these properties. The study authors consider two types of hydroxamic acid analogues to be the most promising: acetamides and oxazolines.

In relation to some tumor tissues, the effectiveness of these compounds even increases: for example, several acetamides showed even greater biological activity against neuroblastoma and colon adenocarcinoma. These compounds turned out to be between 700 and 1500 times less toxic to healthy cells.

“The compounds we obtained can transform cancer cells into healthy cells, causing redifferentiation, which is fundamentally different from the drugs currently used in clinical practice,” explained the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at Stavropol University, Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences. Professor Alexander Aksenov.

He noted that the development of this technology will make it possible to effectively treat both the most dangerous types of cancer located in the brain and other types of tumors.

In the future, the treatment of malignant tumors will have much fewer consequences for the body, and the development of differentiating agents will make it possible to carry out therapy without surgical intervention, by analogy with serious bacterial infections, the scientist is sure.

The team is ready to continue the search for new and more effective molecular structures.
