Britain is rocked by a funeral scandal: it turns out that the deceased’s relatives did not receive their ashes after cremation. Now heartbroken Britons are asking: what is actually kept in funeral urns?

Richard Shaw, from Yorkshire, who lost his wife Rita, went to the funeral home to collect her ashes. The woman died three months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

The couple lived together for almost 15 years and, aged 70, Richard was devastated after losing his beloved. Last December, two weeks late, the funeral home delivered a box containing his wife’s ashes to Shaw. The Briton placed it in a special urn and placed it on the mantelpiece in the living room.

In March, police raided the offices of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors after receiving complaints from relatives of the deceased about improper handling of their loved ones’ bodies, The Daily Mail writes.

In one apartment, the police found 35 bodies instead of three or four, as the documents said, all of them listed as already cremated. After gathering documents, interviewing witnesses and making sure that this confusion, to put it mildly, was constant, the police contacted 163 families who might have been affected by the violations.

Richard Shaw turned out to be one of them. It turned out that on the shelf in the living room he kept not the ashes of his deceased wife, but of someone else. In March, the police reported that they had discovered Rita’s real ashes, and not in the crematorium in Hull, as stated in the agency’s documents, but in another city – Leeds.

It is very difficult to identify cremated remains using DNA; the police were only able to determine from documents, after a lengthy check, that the ashes belonged to Rita.

Richard decided to scatter the “alien” ashes in his garden. The Briton still doesn’t know whose remains were given to him under this disguise.

A similar situation occurred with Peter Welburn, 73, who received an urn containing his wife Shirley’s ashes in December last year. Several months later, police informed him that his wife’s body was still in the morgue.

The funeral home was closed by the court. It owes local authorities thousands of pounds in utility bills. Two of its employees were arrested on charges of theft and money laundering.
