Studio Ghibli won’t release trailers or stills for Hayao Miyazaki’s new cartoon

Date: October 4, 2023 Time: 18:14:33

This year, a new cartoon by the Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki will be released on the screens. Producer and Studio Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki has said the company will not release any images, trailers or publicity for the director’s film How Are You? before the theatrical release.

So far, the film has only one poster, which was shown along with the announcement of the project’s release date. It represents a bird with white and blue plumage. Apart from this image, there will be no new material, at least until the day of the premiere. Hayao Miyazaki’s new film will open in Japan on July 14.

Cartoon “How are you?” inspired by the novel of the same name by Yoshino Genzaburo. In the center of the plot is a 15-year-old schoolboy Koper. He excels in sports, academics, and social life. After the death of his father, the boy goes to live with his uncle, who daily writes notes in his nephew’s diary, where he reflects on everyday and philosophical issues, gives various advice and shares his own experience of him.

It was previously reported that this animated film could be Hayao Miyazaki’s last directing work. Production started in 2016 and was originally supposed to be completed in 2022. However, the process was delayed. Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki even suggested that the animator wanted to dedicate the rest of his life to the project.

Earlier, Guillermo del Toro, following Hayao Miyazaki, condemned AI-created animation. The directors called it “an insult to life itself.” We talk about it in more detail here.
