Taste and color: the first exhibition opened in the Samara Tretyakov Gallery – Rodina

Date: July 15, 2024 Time: 18:07:51

Since 2018, the opening of Kitchen Factory as a creative space has been expected in Samara. It was then that the reconstruction of the building by one of the first Soviet architects, Ekaterina Maksimova, began.

The building itself, built in the shape of a crossed hammer and sickle, was opened in 1932 as a canteen for workers at the Maslennikov factory. It is not surprising that the first exhibition in the newly opened gallery was dedicated to images of food in art by artists of different eras – from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st.

According to the exhibition’s curator, Konstantin Zatsepin, food has returned to these walls not as an object produced here, but as an image. The dining rooms became places of contemplation, and the idea of cyclicality inherent in architecture determined the rhythm of the exhibition.

Paintings that could previously only be seen live in Moscow’s Tretyakov Gallery are now available to Samara residents. The three rooms are not divided chronologically, but thematically: “first”, “second”, “third”.

Paintings by Pyotr Konchalovsky, Sergei Sherstyuk, Tatyana Yablonskaya hang next to Karl Bryullov, Fyodor Solntsev, Ivan Khrutsky; In total, in the Samara Tretyakov Gallery there are now more than a hundred paintings from the collections of the parent gallery.

One of the most interesting sections of the exhibition, the “epigraph section”, is dedicated to simple food. A monoproduct, which in modern cuisine is loaded with seasonings, serving and original cooking methods, in the paintings of Konchalovsky, Volkov, Roginsky, Kabakov, apparently separated by eras, shows the harmony of simplicity.

Bread, milk and carrots are the main characters that convey the private life of the “little man”, his life from the peasant hut to the Soviet communal apartments.
