Jean Veloz passed away at her Los Angeles home on Sunday at the age of 98, her friend and manager told THR. According to a spokesperson, Jean invented his style of swing, “silky and smooth”, in contrast to the harsh, breathy jitterbug that reigned in the 1930s and 1940s. The obituary noted that crowds of fans “idolized” the artist.
Jean Grinnell Phelps was born on March 1, 1924 in Los Angeles. She began Lindy Hop dancing with her brothers and friends at parties, she soon won the jitterbug competition in California, beating out over 500 other competitors, and almost immediately landed her first big screen role.
