Muscovites will have the opportunity to get acquainted with contemporary art not only in galleries and museums, but also on the streets of the capital. Over the three years of the art project’s existence, 50 artists painted over 3,000 square meters of walls in 20 cultural centers and 21 libraries. There are 10 more objects in the queue, including the Moscow Drama Theater “Man”, the Children’s Music School named after Joseph Haydn and others. To transform their appearance, the artists presented their works to the jury in advance. More than 550 sketches came from more than a hundred cities, from which the ten most creative and original were selected.
“Thanks to the project, boring white walls become bright, and contemporary art and street art draw attention not only to themselves, but also to the place. It is no coincidence that these centers receive more and more visitors,” Yulia Yurchenko, art director, told RG. Director of the Moscow Production Center and curator of the “Contours of Culture” project.
For the artists themselves, the project often becomes a social lift and a space for dialogue with the public. This is not the first time that some of the winners have taken part in it. For example, in 2022, Moscow native Stepan Krasnov painted the walls of the Shchukino Center for Culture and Arts and the Lianozov Children’s Library No. 57 with neo-pointillism paintings. Now Stepan is busy with the interiors of the Children’s Art School named after I.S. Bach.
