Banks in Spain deploy their artillery to attract new customers and retain existing ones, constantly launching attractive offers and discounts. From gifts to bonuses for direct debiting the payroll, going through discounts when using your cards in shops or enjoying various experiences in different sectors.
These discount programs and return of a percentage on purchases have become decisive for customers when choosing a bank. According to Sergio Carbajal, head of finance and mortgages at Rastreator, these incentives can be the decisive factor for a client to opt for a particular entity, especially if other banks do not offer these advantages.
However, to respect these discounts or cashback programs, banks also guarantee certain requirements that customers must meet. Some of the most outstanding promotions include discounts of up to 8% on gasoline from Carrefour, BBVA and Abanaca; discounts of up to 7% on supermarket purchases by Bankinter and Carrefour; and promotions of up to 10% savings on travel offered by BBVA, Bankinter and Santander, according to data compiled by the financial products comparator Kelisto.es, “the variety of promotions seeks to attract different customer profiles and satisfy their final needs. ancieras and consumer”, they explain from the comparator.
BBVA discounts 7 cents per liter on your refueling
Banking entities reach agreements with others, groups and/or brands to reach new customers, in addition to retaining and achieving greater ties with current customers. However, the head of finance at Rastreator, Sergio Carbajal, warns that “it is essential not to be captivated at first instance without reading the fine print and the conditions that each entity implies carefully and in detail.”
Taking into account the above, it is interesting for all those vehicle drivers to know that there is an opportunity to save at the end of the month if they pay with a credit card. For example, the Pass Carrefour card offers savings of 8% on fuel, but this discount is applied exclusively at Carrefour gas stations. This is one of the conditions that often present the offers of fuel discounts offered by banks, where the limitation of service stations is a key consideration.
BBVA, for its part, offers the possibility of obtaining a discount of up to 7 cents per liter at Repsol gas stations through your Repsol card plus the BBVA Credit Visa. It is essential for drivers to take into account which station to refuel in order to obtain the desired reduction. For its part, Abanca offers a 5% saving on fuel at Galp gas stations, according to the Kelisto.es analysis.
On the other hand, it is also common to see card options that make this return in fuel at the end of the month, which acts as ‘cashback’, that is, according to Pedro Ruiz de Kelisto, that “they do not give you the discount as such, but rather they give you back what you have spent on certain receipts”. These are some examples that Rastreator have highlighted, such as ING (3%), Abanca (2%), BBVA, Ibercaja or EVO, which has just announced that it incorporates its cashback system with an initial refund of up to 8% in more than 70 shops.
Save 7% in your shopping cart with Bankinter
The discounts for paying with Bankinter’s Bankintercard Platinum card, which already has 687,000 customers in Spain, means saving up to 7% on purchases in supermarkets. This percentage competes with Carrefour discounts with its Carrefour Pass Card, which reaches 1% in all types of supermarkets, according to Ruiz.
From Rastreator they emphasize that in this type of accounts it is important to analyze if they compensate the requirements that the entity imposes against the benefits that it can bring. “The client must be aware of his own habits that he has as a consumer, if your profile as a buyer is high or not to really know if in the long term it will be worth it or the benefit will be practically nil”.

And without reaching such a high percentage, Bankinter through its Halcón Viajes card saves 4% on purchases in Halcón Viajes and Viajes Ecuador. In addition, it is the only bank that offers a discount on the rest of the purchases in the deferred payment method, saving its client 1% of the total.
