The joint operating profit of the main automotive companies worldwide has reached 39,646 million euros in the second quarter of this year. This figure represents an increase of 31.3% over the profit obtained the previous year, and also represents a new record for the sector.

The EY consultancy has prepared a report in which the performance of the 16 most important companies in the automotive manufacturing sector is evaluated globally and has concluded that sales also reached historic figures, reaching 515,779 million euros, 18.1 % than in the same period of the previous year.

Sales have seen the greatest growth in the European market, where they grew by 18%, and in the US, where the increase was 15%. Chinese sales, on the other hand, managed to recover from the 22% drop suffered during the first quarter, with an increase of 6% between May and July.

A drop in demand is prevented

Along the same lines, the Germans registered sales of 155,519 million, followed by the Japanese, 140,689 million, who benefited from the weakness of the yen.

The largest quarterly profit increases were reported by Mazda (254%), Nissan (98%), Toyota (94%), Honda (77%) and Kia (52%). By contrast, Tesla (-3%) and Ford (-22%) were the only ones to reduce their profits. In terms of profit margins, Mercedes-Benz led the list with 13.04%, followed by Kia (12.97%), BMW (11.7%), Toyota (10.6%), Hyundai (10% ) and Tesla (9.6%).

Despite the good results, the consultancy has warned that this year there will be a “turn” in the market as soon as the orders from the chip shortage period have been processed and they will face the “new reality” of falling demand, weak . economy, pressure on prices and the acceleration of electromobility.

At the moment the consultant has indicated that the production of passenger cars is accelerating thanks to a good demand that allows more deliveries to be made at more profitable prices. In Europe, Volkswagen again led “by far” the largest number of vehicles, followed by Stellantis, Renault and BMW.
