The bombing of Yugoslavia is 24 years old: when the US and NATO bombed Belgrade, they didn’t think about what it would turn out for them

To achieve “humanitarian goals”, the West fired 3,000 cruise missiles, dropped 80,000 tons of air bombs

Exactly 24 years ago, on March 24, 1999, the United States and its NATO allies began bombing Yugoslavia. Thousands of the country’s residents, mainly civilians, became victims of that war. To achieve “humanitarian goals,” the West fired 3,000 cruise missiles and dropped 80,000 tons of air bombs, including those with depleted uranium. NATO strikes destroyed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, killing three Chinese citizens and injuring twenty. This day is remembered today in Beijing, where the bombardment by the West was immediately described as “barbaric”.

One of the main inspirers of the “barbarians” was the current US President Biden. So, still as a senator, he recklessly reconsidered his place in this bloody history: “I offered to bomb Belgrade. I suggested sending American pilots to bomb all the Danube bridges. I offered to take away their oil reserves. I suggested very concrete actions ”… In short, he practically shouted:“ I am a barbarian! ”. At least that’s what the Chinese think. And when today he tries to say something about the “crimes” in the actions of Russia, or any other country that trampled on the interests of the United States, it is difficult not to answer: “We heard from the barbarians…”

For Russia, those bombings were a “sobering shock”

The attack was launched without the consent of the UN Security Council, where Russia and China were against it. The pretext for the invasion is ethnic cleansing in the autonomy of Kosovo. The goal is to destroy a united Yugoslavia, to turn the Balkans into geopolitical cubes that can easily fold at the behest of the West. Then in Washington they thought that Russia was already a “cube”, and even our permanent representative to NATO, Vitaly Churkin, was not warned about the upcoming attack. Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov learned of the bombing when his plane was over the Atlantic: he was visiting the United States. The plane circled the ocean and flew to Moscow. The legendary “Primakov U-turn” became the prelude to the independent course of the “new Russia” in international affairs.

On “ethnic cleansing” in Kosovo. In July, shortly after the ceasefire, the newspaper sent me there on a business trip. He traveled to Pristina in the car of the Serbs who lived there. We passed a burned-out village, the car owner explains sparingly: “The Albanian village, the Serbs burned it down.” New ashes: “And this is a Serbian town, the Albanians burned it…” But the West did not pay much attention, it knows how to point out the guilty and proclaim the “offended” to defend them.

Primakov’s U-turn was not just a symbol. Then there was a drop of Russian paratroopers at the Pristina airport in Slatina. He somewhat reassured our “partners”, who did not expect such independence from Moscow. In fact, before that, albeit with reservations, he accepted all the actions of the West. The rumor was cut off when the owner of the Serbian family, who remained, despite the mortal danger for her, in Pristina, told me: “Yes, your Chernomyrdin betrayed us”… And what was the answer to him?

The NATO bombing of Yugoslavia was a tragedy for this country, and for Russia it was a sobering blow that finally helped us understand what kind of “friendship” the West offered us. Then there were still attempts to overcome the “frictions” and peacefully get along with those who indicated which post was intended for Moscow in the “chicken coop” controlled by them. It was quite low, as if they were tired of shaking off the dirt from above. And thank God it didn’t work. Now it definitely won’t work.

And Biden’s words about his role in the bombing of Belgrade are direct confessions to the trial of the “barbarians”, which, who knows, may take place.
