The 7.8-magnitude quake brought the death toll in Turkey to more than 41,000 as of Sunday night, with at least 4,000 more dead in neighboring Syria.
The epicenter of the quake was in the Pazarchik district of Kahramanmaras, where thousands of buildings collapsed and much of the city was left in ruins. Turkish authorities announced on Sunday the suspension of rescue efforts in all but the two provinces most affected by last week’s earthquake, Yunus Sezer, head of Turkey’s emergency agency, told reporters in Ankara. .
There is no hope of finding any survivors anymore, officials are now concerned about how to rebuild the destroyed cities. Millions of people in Turkey have fled their homes. Many have taken refuge in nearby towns where international aid, slow at first, has now picked up, The Guardian reports.
