The entry of Iryo and Ouigo doubles the number of passengers on the Madrid-Valencia route

With the railway liberalization that allowed the entry of Ouigo and Iryo as operators of the route between Madrid and Valencia, it has been possible to double the number of passengers in this corridor in the last quarter of 2022, with one million passengers, according to data from the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC).

Renfe Viajeros continues to be the main operator of this route, holding a share of 42.4% on this route with its Ave trains and 20.9% with Avlo. For its part, Ouigo began a share of 36% and Iryo, available only since mid-December, 0.8%.

On the other hand, in the routes in which only Renfe operates, the demand in the last quarter of 2022 remained below pre-pandemic levels, with the Madrid-Seville corridor 20% below. The Madrid-Alicante route was the only one of the operators only by Renfe that increased its demand.

Ouigo and Iryo offer 50% discounts compared to Renfe

On the route between Madrid and Barcelona, ​​open to competition since May 2021, there were close to 2.9 million travelers in the last quarter of 2022, 35.4% more than the previous year. For this corridor, Renfe achieved a quota of 54% with Ave and 12.7% with Avlo, while Ouigo maintained the 29.1% that it already broke in the same period of 2021. Iryo, who entered this corridor in the middle of November 2022, reached a share of 4.2%.

On this route, Ouigo and Iryo offered an average price of 37 and 42 euros, compared to 78 euros for the Ave journey, while in the service between Madrid and Malaga or Seville, Renfe’s competitors did not drop below 67 euro

On the route between Madrid and Valencia, the alternative operators (Ouigo and Iryo) offered in the last quarter of 2022 tickets with reductions of more than 50% compared to those of Renfe, with the average price of Ave at 50 euros and, that of Gory, at 19.

The discounts take effect and promote the use of commuter trains

With the implementation of free Media Distancia tickets and a 50% discount on the maximum historical subscriptions.

Likewise, although still without reaching pre-pandemic levels, the Cercanías services increased the number of travelers by 25.8% in this period, the largest increase since the third quarter of 2020, and the offer increased by 4.2%.

Regarding the transport of goods, the number of tons transported by rail in the last quarter of 2022 fell by 6.9% compared to the previous period, accusing the problems in the French network. Renfe Mercancías continued to be the company with the most activity, transporting 53% of the total tons, followed by Captrain (14%), Continental (13%) and Transfesa (8%).
