The environmental commitment of the energy sector is key to combating climate change

The increase in the temperature of the planet due to global warming has put on the table the importance of fighting climate change together. Greenhouse gas emissions from human activity have led to extreme weather events that are increasingly worrying society.

For the first time, the 2020 World Economic Forum report ranked environmental risks among the most serious for the global economy. An alert that has helped many companies, administrations and countries around the world to establish common goals to protect the planet and guarantee the well-being of all.

A commitment that is beginning to bear fruit and opens a new horizon of hope after the latest evaluation by the United Nations (UN), which has announced that the ozone layer is on track to fully recover by 2066 if the conditions are maintained. restrictions on the use of harmful chemicals such as aerosols. In addition, the progressive elimination of these products will already contribute to the mitigation of climate change, since it would prevent the planet from warming up to 0.5 degrees more by the end of this century.

However, to continue advancing in this fight, it is also necessary to adapt our economy to the resources that nature offers. In other words, learning to live according to the rhythms and limits of the planet, especially when it comes to producing and consuming to generate wealth without depleting natural resources or negatively impacting the environment.

In fact, this is the basic principle that defends sustainability, also represented within the Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PERTE), and which pursues the failure of the planet without harming the needs of future generations to achieve a complete development and balanced on a social, environmental and economic level. An objective that can only be achieved with the active involvement of each one of us, with the energy sector being one of the key players.

Naturgy assumes that the energy transition is “a real opportunity” against climate change

In this context, Naturgy is transforming its current business model to establish the bases to continue creating value through the energy transition, investing in gas and renewable energy, and promoting energy efficiency and the circular economy. Proof of this is its 2021-2025 Strategic Plan, a business model with which the entity assumes that the energy transition is a “real opportunity” to fight climate change.

In its 175-year history, the company has adapted to the social, technological and economic changes that the world has experienced during all this time, taking advantage of all the opportunities that the environment has generated at all times. In fact, its most recent milestone is related to the sustainable initiatives carried out in the last decade.

Naturgy has been recognized as one of the companies most committed to the environment worldwide. A distinction that has been awarded for the twelfth time by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) index, a non-profit organization that annually analyzes climate action and the management of forests and water resources of the main companies and governments.

To this end, the work carried out by the energy company in relation to corporate governance, strategy, risk and opportunity management, metrics and emission reduction targets has been taken into account. Some parameters that Naturgy has correctly met since 2010, the first year in which it forms part of this classification. In addition, in this edition, it has also been recognized with a “Direction” level for its management of water resources.

Naturgy’s sustainable commitment

Naturgy’s 2025 Sustainability Plan pursues quantifiable objectives that make it possible to comply with the strategy set in this area. Sustainability is precisely the backbone of the roadmap of this multinational, from which it seeks to reduce the environmental impact, as well as increase the involvement and commitment of all its stakeholders.

Aware of the impact that its activities can have on the environment, Naturgy pays special attention to protecting the environment and the efficient use of natural resources. For this reason, it directs all its efforts to be endorsed as a responsible company with the energy transition.

The company has established a sustainable strategy to reduce the impact it can cause on the environment

Based on six levers with 21 lines of action and 74 committed objectives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda, this plan also aims to reduce total CO2 emissions by 24% and protect biodiversity through of more than 350 projects to preserve ecosystems.

Initiatives that have served to significantly reduce total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, 16.5% less than in 2021, especially scope 3 indirect emissions. In this way, the company’s total carbon footprint is has reduced by 24% compared to 2017, thus advancing the reduction target established to 2025.

In addition, it should be remembered that Naturgy was one of the first Spanish companies to have a Sustainability Committee, a body that is in charge of periodically supervising the management of risks and opportunities, as well as the evolution of environmental performance, mainly through the following indicators and goals.

Driving the circular economy

Continuing with the commitment to support the sustainable development of society and, at the same time, guarantee the supply of energy in a “competitive, safe and with the utmost respect for the environment” way, Naturgy also promotes renewable gas projects based on in the circular economy.

An example of this is the Elena Plant, located in the Parc de l’Alba in Cerdanyola del Vallés (Barcelona), with which the company achieved a milestone by being the first company to inject renewable gas from landfill into the distribution network of Gas de España, which demonstrates its commitment to the energy transition and places it at the forefront of innovation to develop this new energy vector, which will contribute significantly to the decarbonisation of the country’s energy system.

Naturgy works to conserve biodiversity, natural capital and cultural heritage

Among the advantages of renewable gas, there is the improvement of the environmental management of organic waste as conflictive as livestock waste, slurry or manure, which also avoids the undesirable effects that these produce on people and biodiversity due to pollution, bad odors, etc. . .

Biodiversity and natural capital

Naturgy also works to conserve biodiversity, natural capital and cultural heritage in the surroundings of its facilities. Among its plans is the restoration of ecosystems to maximize the capture of CO2 and the neutralization of emissions, ensuring the protection of native fauna and flora.

Likewise, it carries out different actions to reduce and compensate the negative impacts on biodiversity. Only last year, it carried out 345 initiatives, 20% of which were voluntary.

On the other hand, thinking about the next generations and the challenges of the future, it allocates resources to cultural, social, sustainability and environmental programs to face and solve issues such as access to energy for vulnerable groups or minimize the effects of the energy transition has in some territories to ensure that it is fair.

Naturgy is sensitive to current problems and, therefore, wants to combat climate change, a social reality that worries more people every day. A commitment that has been made clear with its projects and strategic plans, which have also been recognized worldwide.
