President Metsola has launched an urgent procedure to strip two MEPs of their immunity at the request of the Belgian judiciary.
It should be noted that Metsola will formally present a request to lift the immunity of these EP members at the plenary session on January 16.
“The perpetrators will see that this parliament is on the side of the law. Corruption cannot pay, and we will do everything we can to fight it,” the president was quoted as saying in the statement.
In early December, the deputy head of the EP, Eva Kaili, became a defendant in a corruption case. Belgian authorities suspect the Greek woman and several other people of financial fraud and bribery.
