The Ussuriysky Reserve was specially chosen, leopards disappeared there more than 50 years ago. Therefore, Leo 260M became part of a project to restore the population of this unique subspecies of wild cats. It became the third leopard to be safely released into the area. Male Leo 270M and female Leo 284F already live in the reserve. They are all monitored with collars and camera traps.

– Since the beginning of the century, the population of leopards in Primorye has more than tripled, from 35 to 125 individuals. We hope that in the process of implementing the reintroduction project, Leo 260M will find a partner and become the founder of a new family of leopards, – says Viktor Bardyuk, director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of the Land of the Leopard.

Leo 260M, an emaciated orphan kitten, was discovered near the borders of the national park in July 2022. He was taken to MROO’s “Tiger Center”, where he learned to hunt.

By the way

Since 2015, the Rehabilitation Center has received two more leopards rescued from the wild. These are Leo 80M and Leo 131M males. Due to the nature of their injuries, they could not be released into the wild. Both predators are now in the Moscow Zoo’s Center for the Reproduction of Rare Animal Species.
