“Russia is the most smoking country in the world!” – such an impartial sensation was issued by one of the foreign Internet portals. Link: to a survey on the purchase of tobacco products, carried out in different countries in October 2021 – September 2022 among two thousand respondents from 18 to 64 years old. In our country, 46% of smokers were counted. That is, supposedly every second he smokes. The top three also include Spain (42%) and Germany (40%).

Meanwhile, Russia is known as one of the countries with the strictest anti-smoking legislation. Since 2014 we have the Law “On the Protection of the Health of Citizens from the Effects of Secondhand Tobacco Smoke and the Consequences of Tobacco Consumption”. It is recognized as highly effective at the international level – the author of this publication has personally heard such assessments more than once at the largest conferences of specialists around the world. Maybe the “golden” norms remained only on paper?

Nothing like this. With our own eyes, we see that cafes and restaurants, clubs, lobbies of electric trains, where before it was possible to suffocate on tobacco smoke, today are really “free” of nicotine. “I recently saw a girl smoking and suddenly thought it was very strange,” says a colleague. Russians have not only stopped smoking, but also changed their attitude towards cigarettes and nicotine addiction. It really is “not fashionable” anymore, it hurts the eye.

There are also statistics. And, not just domestic. The Ministry of Health cited the most recent data, both ours and the authoritative global survey of adults on tobacco use GATS. “According to Rosstat and GATS in 2009, the prevalence of smoking among men and women was 69%. To date, it is around 21% ”, reports the official TG channel of the agency. That is, the proportion of smokers in our country has decreased by more than three times.

And what about the “sensational” survey on 46% of smokers? The method of data collection and processing, the methodology raises questions and doubts, experts warn. From whom and how did you get the answers? How representative is the audience sample? Or as in that joke: “100% of Russians are treated with homeopathy, a survey of visitors to a homeopathic pharmacy showed”?

The GATS study is a very different matter. They trust him, because everything is clearly worked out, the methods are debugged (used since 2007), everything is transparent. “GATS results provide information on key respondent characteristics, levels of tobacco use (smoking and other forms), smoking cessation, secondhand smoke, economics, role of mass media and knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of various related aspects. to the consumption of tobacco”, explain the experts.

– GATS surveys increase the capacity of countries to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control programmes. But in whose interest the next “research” was conducted (about 46% of smokers in Russia. – Ed.) – an open question. The Ministry of Health warns: smoking and the dissemination of false news are harmful to health, the agency concluded.

From the editor: And yet doctors are sounding the alarm. Yes, we have reduced the “traditional” use of tobacco, the classic consumption of cigarettes. But addiction to nicotine-laced electronics is unfortunately gaining momentum. Moreover, mainly among young people. At the same time, more and more data speaks to the dangers of novel ways of “breeding.” Health cannot suffer less, if not more. It is not surprising that the deputies of the State Duma have raised the question of banning vaporizers.
