After the decisive match of the tournament, in which the Russian U-18 team lost to the Belarusian U-20 team 5:6 in extra time, the players of the Russian national team committed an ugly and unsportsmanlike act. At the ceremony, the captain of the Russian team, Yegor Surin, left the second place award on the ice, and goalkeeper Piotr Andreyanov and forward Vadim Dudorov did the same with their awards for the best players of the tournament in their roles.
The Russian Hockey Federation issued an official statement regarding this incident specifically for RG, and the hockey players apologized for their behavior.
“The FHR expresses concern about the episode that occurred after the match between the Belarusian youth team and the Russian youth team at the Future Cup in Minsk. We are studying all the circumstances that led to the misunderstanding associated with the youth hockey decision. The players of the team must leave individual and team awards on the ice. He also declares that he does not welcome the behavior of the youth team hockey players and provides a statement from the team players,” the FHR comment reads.
And here is a joint statement from the team’s hockey players Egor Surin, Vadim Dudorov and Pyotr Andreyanov:
“We, the players of the Russian under-18 youth team, appreciate the opportunity to play at the international level against the national teams of the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as the conditions that the Belarusian Hockey Federation creates for our equipment. in Minsk every time.
We regret that our actions with the awards at the ceremony after the match against the Belarusian team in the Future Cup tournament could be considered disrespectful.
Our action was determined by our emotional state after the game, which was influenced by a series of referee decisions that we considered controversial, even in extra time, the most tense moment of the game. We have great respect for the opponent and the host organization, that is why we participated in the ceremony until the end and shook hands with the hockey players of the Belarusian national team. “We are sure that our teams will have many bright and memorable matches ahead that will help the development of our sport in both countries.”
We are monitoring the situation.
It is gratifying that the response to the Rossiyskaya Gazeta speech came so quickly. But the reaction is not what one would expect. Let us at least consider this phrase from the young members of our team, who at the end of the match showed themselves unworthy: “We… shook hands with the hockey players of the Belarusian national team.” What is value? If so, it will be on the part of the hockey players of the Belarusian team, who accepted a handshake from those who insulted them, from the organizers and from the fans.
The reaction of the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) is unclear. Maybe because she is only the first. He calls the incident a “misunderstanding” and the FHR does not “appreciate” the behavior of the hockey players. Surely the word “condemnation” would be more appropriate here. We believe that the first letter will be followed by specific measures that the respected federation will take.
