The first festival “The Power of Color” was held in the Arctic

In most of Russia, summer has almost arrived, and in the Arctic, the ski season is still in full swing. To attract tourists to the Russian North, this year they came up with and held the Power of Color festival, which took place on the first ten days of May at the Bolshoy Vudyavr ski resort in the city of Kirovsk, Murmansk region.

The complex is located on the slopes of the Khibiny ridge. Experienced skiers have known this place for a long time. In Soviet years, USSR downhill, slalom and ski jumping competitions were held here. Today it is already a fashionable place, with a developed infrastructure, high-speed rail, cableways and a panoramic restaurant on top of the mountain. Bolshoy Vudyavr is included in the list of the best ski resorts in Russia, and in 2022 it won the nomination “Russia’s best ski resort in the North-Western Federal District” of the Russian National Mountain Award. Its main advantage is that here, perhaps, the longest ski season in Russia is 7 months a year.

– We are holding the Power of Color festival to show the whole country that we can ski in the Murmansk region until the summer. Last year we closed the season on June 1, this year we plan to keep this record. Now, in May, all routes of different difficulty levels are open, – said Alexander Eliseev, Chairman of the Murmansk Region Tourism Committee.

The festival gathered 10,000 participants, many of them came not only for the fresh mountain air and long bright sun – the polar day is about to arrive in the Arctic – but also for the arctic cuisine, which is famous in the whole country. 9 well-known restaurants from the Murmansk and Karelia region presented their unique dishes in the street food format.

The basis of modern Arctic cuisine is the simple and understandable dishes of Russian cuisine, the Sami and Pomor peoples. They are prepared from local products: cod, halibut, ruff, venison, northern berries (blackberries, cranberries and blueberries), sea urchins, scallops.

Thus, in addition to the descent from the mountain, the guests of the festival had one more entertainment: try all the dishes and choose their favorite.

The choice is not easy: dirstroganoff (reindeer beef stroganoff) or elk burger, zaeburikha (a fish dish similar to stew) or kalya (a soup of different types of fish in cucumber pickle), northern fish stroganina or venison tartare, reindeer moss chips, or lingonberry pies. And also heat fruit drinks from northern berries and deer broth, which is boiled for 18 hours.

All this gastronomic splendor appeared thanks to the Taste of the Arctic festival, which has been taking place since 2018. Stylish gastrofest food trucks are found at many entertainment events that take place in the arctic regions. The idea is to promote arctic cuisine, present the capabilities of local chefs – they themselves always work at festivals, because here they can instantly try new recipes and get feedback from customers. The task of chefs is not easy: a street restaurant dish must be served in such a way that it retains its taste and is convenient to eat, holding it with one hand. The event is held under the patronage of the Gastronomic Map of Russia project with the participation of the project director Ekaterina Shapovalova.

– The task of our festival is to eat our own and get acquainted with our culture, – says Ekaterina Shapovalova. – We want guests to be able to taste local food everywhere: at the hotel breakfast, in the street food truck, in a restaurant, shopping at the market. After all, one of our goals is to understand our own roots, the history of the region through the taste of local products.

The organizers calculated that in two days the guests of the festival tasted 5,200 servings of arctic dishes and 3,300 servings of drinks.

Excursions were organized especially for the guests of the festival, accompanied by the best guides of the Khibiny tourist cluster. The event closed with an outdoor concert. The headliners of the musical part of the event were Olga Seryabkina, My Michel and Dj Clubkilla.

The festival was held as part of the action plan of the Russian Presidency of the Arctic Council, which is operated by the Roscongress Foundation. A cross-cutting priority of the presidency is to ensure responsible governance for the sustainable development of the Arctic. The main objective of the Power of Color festival is to popularize arctic tourism.
