“Ukraine calls on UN member states to restore the application of the UN Charter on the issue of the legitimacy of the Russian Federation’s membership in the UN, deprive the Russian Federation of the status of permanent member of the Council of security of the UN and exclude from the UN as a whole,” the statement said.
This is not the first time that Ukraine has filed a “demand” to expel Russia from the UN, but it is known that this is impossible, since the country’s membership is detailed in the letter. So, in October, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the West was trying to “privatize” the secretariat of the organization for its own purposes, in connection with which the UN reform was overdue, but the exclusion of Russia is impossible.
In addition, as noted in the summer, the exclusion of a separate country cannot be carried out by a Security Council decision, because the Russian Federation has the right to veto it. Earlier, UN chief António Guterres spoke out against removing Russia from international global political platforms.
