This document, better known as the “Foradori-Duncan Pact”, after the names of the vice foreign ministers of the two countries that coordinated it, was concluded in 2016 during the presidency of Mauricio Macri. The Argentine Foreign Ministry explained that the denunciation of the agreement confirms the focus of Buenos Aires on continuing the fight for the return of sovereignty over the islands, whose ownership has been disputed for several decades by the two countries.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry described the pact as “one of the most harmful events” to advance the country’s interests in this matter. An official note delivered to the British ambassador maintains that this agreement, whose basic idea was to remove obstacles to the economic growth and sustainable development of the islands, generally worked only in favor of the United Kingdom. The provisions contained therein, according to the current government, actually make the pact “clearly illegal and offensive to the national interests” of Argentina.
Buenos Aires hopes that the denunciation of the document is a clear signal to the United Kingdom, confirming Argentina’s territorial claims. “This is definitely leaving behind that ‘dark period in history’ marked by the shameful sovereignty transfer pact,” Diego Carmona, the country’s foreign relations secretary for the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic, told reporters. He also highlighted that from that day on, Buenos Aires will actively promote a specific agenda for the reestablishment of its sovereignty over the islands.
