The Government of Catalonia. led by Pere Aragonès, has launched an order against the Government of Spain chaired by Pedro Sánchez. Natàlia Mas, Minister of Economy and Finance, has indicated that the unique financing proposal for Catalonia includes the Generalitat collecting 100% of the taxes paid in the autonomous community. In this way, the Government would go from collecting 9% of taxes to all of them, which it estimates represents potential income of 52,000 million euros annually, double that of the current financing model.
This was stated today, Tuesday, at a press conference after the Executive Council, together with the Government spokesperson, Patricia Plaja, where she assured that the proposal provides for a transfer to the State for the services it provides in the region and a territorial rebalancing fund. . Both have insisted on the proposal for “singular financing” for Catalonia with the aim of reducing the fiscal deficit of the autonomy, which amounts to a total of 22,000 million euros.
With it, the ERC Government aims to obtain specific financing for Catalonia that allows it to exit the common autonomous regime and for the Generalitat to collect all the taxes. Currently, Catalonia is part of the common regional financing regime, by which the central administration collects most of the taxes and then transfers a part to the autonomies; The Basque Country and Navarra, on the other hand, are governed by the regional regime, so that they collect all taxes in exchange for a ‘quota’ that they then pay to the State.
The Parliament overturned Aragonès’ budgets
The proposal by the ERC Government comes after the call for early elections in Catalonia, which will be held on May 12 and which the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, called after the Parliament rejected the budgets of the General itat for 2024.
