The Harvard method to do a task that you have been postponing for a long time

Date: March 29, 2024 Time: 17:02:20

There are tasks that accumulate, whether at work or at home. That report you don’t want to start writing because you’re terribly lazy or that laundry you’ve picked up from the clothes rack but haven’t put in the closet yet. We all procrastinate, but when it gets out of hand it can end up being a productivity problem and can have negative consequences for our stress and nervousness levels.

To fight against procrastination and get things done that we don’t want to face, but which are still there, expert Pedro Bregman writes in the Harvard Business Review how to face them. He refers to this process of starting a task as transition and talks about how, really, everything consists of starting and adapting the body and mind to the need to carry out and finish, effectively, that pending task. “The biggest struggle is not doing that task, it’s starting it,” he says.

The biggest challenge to advance in any job, task, commission… It is the transition from when we start working on it until we are halfway through the task. This transition, he explains, almost always represents a change from doing something “comfortable” to doing something “uncomfortable”: from sitting to having to clean the house, from being focused on a task that we like to start another that we don’t, having to Start a call…

The steps to follow to avoid procrastination

The best way to start doing that task you’ve been putting off for so long is to follow these steps that Bregman recommends. First, you have to identify why it is important to do that task and, next, detect what would be the moment of transition to start doing it (pick up the phone and dial, write the title of the report, open Word…).

Once these starting points have been established, the decision must be made as to when to start working on this task, the time and the moment. Thus, the next step is to prepare for it and know that, during the first moments of the process, it is possible to feel negative emotions such as doubts, insecurities… But, above all, you have to know how to save them. That is the last step, moving forward in the work we are developing without getting distracted.

Three keys to maintain habits and not procrastinate

In this procedure, there are three keys that are important. The first is to start the task with willpower to be able to overcome the moment of transition until the mind adapts to the new work we are doing.

Then, you have to commit to repetition, that is, to make it a habit to face that task or others (for example, we will not always have to write the same report, but we will have to write documents, before which we can follow the same process ).

Finally, we must know how to take advantage of having adapted our mind and body to face less pleasant tasks. Probably, once finished, a great feeling of satisfaction invades us.
