The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recommended that Russian athletes be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. However, this will only happen if they did not support a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine. This was reported on the IOC website.
According to the organization, no athlete should be excluded from the competition just because of their passport. In addition, the Olympic Movement must continue its efforts to unite people and fight discrimination. In this regard, the committee proposed to allow citizens of Russia and Belarus to participate in the Olympic Games in a neutral state.
Each athlete’s application is supposed to be considered individually. To participate in the Games, Russian and Belarusian athletes must not “act contrary to the IOC’s peacekeeping mission.” They are also fully obliged to follow the world anti-doping code and comply with all the necessary rules in this regard, as well as respect the eligibility criteria for competitions and comply with them during tournaments.
In case of violations, athletes must be immediately withdrawn from the competition and suspended from participating in it in the future. Other sanctions may also be imposed on them, which will be discussed separately by the IOC. The Russian Olympic Committee was not satisfied with the IOC recommendation.
Earlier it became known that the Olympic Games will not be broadcast in Russia until 2032. You can still watch the 2024 competitions in Paris. We talk about it in more detail here.
