What emotions do relatives of released Ukrainian defenders experience? Radio Liberty found out.

The doctor Ekaterina Polishchuk, known by the pseudonym “Bird”, called her mother immediately after her release.

We could talk a bit, because everything revolves around emotions. Katya is alive, healthy and in Ukraine

“In the evening he called and said that he was already in Ukraine. We could talk a bit, because everything revolves around emotions. Katya is alive and well in Ukraine! I asked her how she felt about herself. That yes, tired, scared and scared, because she did not know where they were taking them.

As soon as they allow me, I will go with my daughter. I have been waiting for our meeting for a long time. I can’t wait until she goes to rehab. And I have to go through that, because I spent three months at the Azovstal plant, I was in captivity for four months. Although it is strong, but the human resource has limitations. I am very grateful to all the people in Ukraine and the world for their support and prayers for my Katya. We wait with prayers and God’s help. We have been waiting for her for a long time,” says Svetlana Polishchuk.

Ekaterina Polishchuk has been in captivity since May 19. That day, she told her mother that she would not be in contact for a long time. In July, Ekaterina’s mother learned that her daughter was in captivity in the village of Olenevka, Donetsk region. On September 19, Russian propagandists published a video in which they called the doctor Ekaterina Polishchuk a sniper. This video, according to Radio Liberty, was filmed a month ago and distributed six days before the prisoner exchange.

Maryana Mamonova pregnant released

Among the women released from Russian captivity is a military doctor, Maryana Mamonova, 30, who is nine months pregnant. She is due to give birth in early October, her sister Anna Martsinkevich told Radio Liberty.

Maryana Mamonova was captured on April 4, when she was at the Ilyich plant in Mariupol. She there she provided medical care to wounded soldiers. Since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Maryana Mamonova has been in the service as a military doctor. He communicated with her relatives before her captivity and they found out about her pregnancy.

However, there has been no contact with her since her capture. The relatives knew that she was captured by seeing Maryana in the photograph. Her relatives did not know what conditions she was in, they knew that she was in a colony in Olenovka.

Mariana is feeling fine. She has already passed the exam and was transferred to the maternity ward.

They were very concerned about his condition, they were afraid that their son would be taken from them. They had no idea how Maryana would give birth in captivity.

“I talked to my sister yesterday. Is so big! She feels fine. She had already been examined and transferred to the maternity ward. We want to pick her up from Chernihiv and bring her home to the Rivne region so that she can be here with us, give birth here. Her family will be by her side. Mariana also wants this. Now we are trying to solve all the problems”, says Anna Martsinkevich.

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War has published a complete list of those who managed to be returned from Russian captivity as a result of the exchange announced on September 21.

This list includes Acting Commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade, Sergei Volynsky (“Volyn”); Deputy Commander of the Azov Regiment Svyatoslav Palamar (Kalina); the commander of the commander’s company, which directly commanded the defense of Azovstal, Oleg Khomenko; senior soldier, known for his photographs of the Azovstal plant, Dmitry Kazatsky.

Lydia Palamar, the mother of Svyatoslav Palamar (Kalina), last spoke with her son on May 20, as he left the Azovstal plant. She then she said that for a long time she would have no connection with him.

I always knew my son is a hero. Ukrainian blood runs through his veins

“I always knew my son is a hero. Ukrainian blood runs through his veins. The boys have been very worthy and will continue to be. Yesterday, when my son was released, I did not speak to him. He called his son back and when he smiles in the photo, he is just talking to his son. He asked me to convey to him that everything is fine with him, that he is alive. His wife called me and told me everything. I know he is in Turkey, but I don’t know where exactly. The son is emaciated, very gray… this is what I saw in the video. Even the grandson asked, what kind of shadow is falling, or something. And this is how Svyatoslav turned gray. He looks exhausted.

We will go to Turkey if they let us. The child is alive, not in captivity, safe, and this is important. He is a military man and he won’t say much, just that he is alive and well. It is very important that the women were released: both “Ptashka” and the pregnant woman. They were all morally exhausted, I know they were psychologically broken”, Lydia Palamar told Radio Libertad.

At large is Yuri Novosyadlo, a 24-year-old resident of Lviv, a fighter from Azov for four years. On February 24, Yuri was in Mariupol.

On May 17, Yuri wrote to his mother that they were being removed under some kind of guarantee that they were unaware of. And the next day, in the morning, he said that they would leave the Azovstal plant at the end of the week.

The next time Irina Novosyadlo spoke to her son was after the September 21 exchange.

I will support my son, he must go through rehab and help other guys.

“We had a very short conversation with them, we said that he was in Ukraine and that he would make a phone call. I should call back tonight. He sent me the picture of him, he lost weight and he was tired. He lost 25-30 kg, very tired, but he is alive in Ukraine. He is being examined now. This is what I know. I can’t come back to myself, since I live in a parallel reality. But we will continue fighting for all those who are in captivity today. I will keep fighting until we finish them all. I will support my son, he must go through rehabilitation and help other guys, ”says Irina Novosyadlo.

The September 21 POW swap was the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Currently, the defenders will go through rehabilitation, adaptation, recovery and treatment.

Five commanders, and these are Denis Prokopenko, Svyatoslav Palamar, Sergey Volynsky, Oleg Khomenko, Denis Shlega from the National Guard of Ukraine, will be in Turkey until the end of the war.

REFERENCE: The large-scale Russian military invasion of Ukraine has been going on since the morning of February 24. Russian troops are carrying out airstrikes against key military and civilian infrastructure, destroying airfields, military units, oil depots, gas stations, churches, schools and hospitals. The shelling of residential areas is carried out with artillery, multiple launch rocket systems and ballistic missiles.

Russia denies that it is waging an aggressive war against Ukraine on its soil, calling it a “special operation” that aims to “demilitarize and denazify.”

Several Western countries, including the United States and EU countries, have tightened sanctions against Russia and condemned Russia’s large-scale unprovoked invasion and Russian military actions in Ukraine.
