Pedro Sánchez announced this same Tuesday, December 27, the approval of a new decree-law on anti-crisis measures at the press conference after the Council of Ministers. This is already the sixth package of economic measures that has been approved since March with the aim of curbing the economic consequences derived from the war in Ukraine.
This set of aid will enter into force on January 1 and will include new measures to deal with the escalation in the prices of food, fuel and electricity and other direct effects of inflation. The Prime Minister himself has indicated that the idea is to continue “protecting vulnerable groups from the increase in the price of food and other basic necessities.”
One approved of the novelties regarding the packages previously is the creation of a check to help the shopping basket of vulnerable families. This will have a value of 200 euros and will be a single payment. As estimated by the Government, the measure will affect more than 4 million citizens. In addition, the essential requirement will be to have an income of less than 27,000 euros per year.
Likewise, with the aim of cushioning the impact of rising inflation and alleviating families’ food spending, VAT will be lowered for six months from 4% to 0% on basic food items. But what exactly are the affected commodities?
List of basic necessities
This list of essential products is marked in Law 37/1993 on Value Added Tax, which until now had established a super-reduced VAT of 4% and would go to 0%. To this is also added another measure by which both oil and pasta will reduce their VAT from 10% to 5%. The Government’s objective is to be able to cope with the increasing rise in prices that has been experienced since the invasion of Ukraine.
