The Louis Vuitton Foundation will present a retrospective of Mark Rothko

Date: June 22, 2024 Time: 14:48:27

The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris has revealed the theme of the upcoming exhibition, which will replace the current exhibition of works by pop artist Andy Warhol and neo-expressionist Jean-Michel Basquiat. It will be the work of American artist Mark Rothko, writes Hypebeast.

The exhibition will open on October 18, 2023 and will run until April 2, 2024. This will be the first Rothko retrospective in France since the 1999 exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. It will follow the development of his work, from early landscapes and lesser-known paintings created in the 1930s and 1940s, to works from the postwar period.

A total of 115 works will be on display, both from museums and private collections around the world, including Rothko’s 1958 series of wall paintings, which he commissioned from New York’s Four Seasons restaurant.

Earlier, Louis Vuitton and Sotheby’s announced the auction: it started on June 28 and will last until July 12. The lots were 22 collectible Louis Vuitton Artycapucines bags. The proceeds of the sale will be donated to charities that work to eliminate poverty, the consequences of natural disasters, as well as the education and protection of the rights of refugees. Among them are UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders.
