The primator (mayor) of the Czech capital, Zdeněk Hřib, took the initiative to deprive Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev of the status of honorary citizen of Prague.

Konev, who led the liberation of Prague from the Nazis by the Red Army, received this honorary title in June 1945.

– The act of conferring the title of honorary citizen must be considered in the temporal context and in the context of the historical evolution of our country. Grzyb said.

The date of consideration of the mayor’s initiative seems no less cynical: the Prague City Council will discuss it today, on Victory Day.

In April 2020, the authorities of the 6th district of Prague, also at the initiative of Grzhib, demolished the Konev monument, trying to justify their actions by “moving the monument from public space to a museum”. The museum, which the mayor planned to call the Museum of Memory of the 20th Century, has not yet been inaugurated.

Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev commented on Grzhib’s proposal on his Telegram channel, calling it disgusting. And he pointed out that Adolf Hitler and SS Obergruppenführer Konrad Henlein remain honorary citizens of one and Czech cities. Medvedev also pointed to the silence of Western countries not only on this issue, but also on the resurgence of Nazism, in particular, in Ukraine.

– It was not very smart of us to immerse Westerners (as well as some dirty brothers from the former socialist camp) in their historical and ideological impurities: for the moment they were thought to be, after all, “partners” and even former allies . Yes, and our people are indulgent and generous. However, we cannot and will not tolerate the silence of the screaming, the disgusting blindness that “does not notice” the resurgence of neo-Nazism in Ukraine,” Medvedev said.
