The number of leaks of confidential data of Russian companies multiplied by 2.3 – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: July 13, 2024 Time: 18:52:59

In terms of the number of public incidents of this type in the first six months of this year, the retail sector leads: it accounted for 42% of leaks. They are followed by the services sector (11%), social networks, forums and blogs (8%), the financial sector (7%) and the media (5%). This was reported by the external digital threat monitoring center Solar AURA.

“The analyzes mainly show the results of massive attacks on the most widespread and least protected organizations, for example small online stores. Hence the leadership of retail trade in the ranking,” the press service clarified.

Regarding the hacking of social networks, blogs and forums, the number of incidents in this area has increased due to a series of attacks on various forums in the sector. As analysts explained, the owners of these sites rarely pay attention to cybersecurity issues. Previously, they rarely became victims of hackers, but now the selectivity of attackers has decreased, and therefore any resource has become vulnerable.

The distribution of leaks by volume of published data shows a similar picture. However, here the first place is occupied by the credit and financial industry, which is explained by several large-scale leaks that occurred in credit and microfinance organizations.

As Positive Technologies previously reported, business and government organizations remain one of the main targets of hackers: in the fourth quarter of 2023, the proportion of attacks against them increased to 78% of the total. The main penetration vectors for cybercriminals are the endpoints: computers, network equipment and servers, which they reach by hacking contractors, exploiting vulnerabilities and using phishing emails.

The most notable event in May 2024 was an attack on the infrastructure of the SDEK service, as a result of which the company was unable to restore package delivery for three days.

One of the possible causes of these failures, according to experts, could be an attack by an encryption virus. As a study by Strategy Partners points out, less than 5% of companies in Russia have a crisis plan in case of a ransomware virus attack and have carried out training to solve it. And less than half plan to restore IT systems for business processes when the technology is unavailable.
