“The number of victims of the floods exceeded 11,000 and those missing are about 20,000,” the report said, citing the local Red Crescent.
According to Libyan media, Cyclone Daniel reached the country’s coast on Sunday. As a result of the disaster, a significant area of eastern Libya was underwater, including large cities on the country’s coast, as well as dozens of towns and cities. In Derna, strong water currents washed away two dams and the city’s network of roads and bridges was destroyed.
Local authorities declared all disaster-affected areas disaster zones and temporarily closed air and sea ports. A curfew was imposed in cities affected by the disaster. Rescuers estimate that the death toll from the flood could reach 20,000 people.
