The problems and prospects of Russian neo-Kantianism were discussed at the IKBFU – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The head of the department of ontology and theory of knowledge at the Patrice Lumumba People’s Friendship University, Vladimir Belov, dedicated his report to this topic. The main problem, according to the scientist, lies in defining the very concept of Russian Kantianism and its periodization.

This direction is new for our country. It gained popularity only at the beginning of the 20th century, occupying an intermediate position between orthodox mystical metaphysics and atheistic materialism. It is not easy to bring together the works of all the philosophers of the new movement. They are written in different languages: English, German, French and even Czech. Furthermore, many works are still preserved in archives or not published at all. There is not a single major work on Russian Neo-Kantianism, unlike the Western philosophical school.

The very concept of Kantianism includes the system of critical philosophy developed by Immanuel Kant. However, it is based not only on the works of the great thinker, but also on other philosophical systems that arose under the influence of his ideas.

Foreign Neo-Kantianism was formed in the 1860s by the German philosophers Otto Liebmann and Friedrich Albert Lange. Together they opposed materialism and referred to transcendental logic in the works of Immanuel Kant. Scientists set themselves the task of turning to the great thinker and forming a philosophy that would meet the requirements of science of that time. Neo-Kantianism is characterized by a renewed interest in the theoretical foundations of the humanities and the philosophical foundations of political theory.

Russia got its way. Russian philosophy as a whole was formed on the basis of Russian culture and was, to a certain extent, its reflection. At some point, scientists even proposed a unique term – “Russian philosophical culture.” Therefore, the main characteristic of our neo-Kantianism is its independence, which cannot be said of Western schools.

Our scientists have always sought to find their national identity in world philosophical themes, and in national philosophical originality they have sought and expressed global philosophical trends. Russian thinkers believed, rightly, that Kant’s critique of reason also becomes a critique of culture, and that one does not cancel out the other.

– Russian Neo-Kantianism, at first glance, seems to be a rather disparate and fragmented formation. Today we cannot point to any social association, school or magazine in which Neo-Kantianism represents the leading force and determines its character. The Logos magazine can be cited as an example, although it is difficult to call it neo-Kantian, Vladimir Belov concluded. – In general, the Russian school actively used the ideas of European philosophy to develop German Neo-Kantianism, overcome its one-sided orientation and correct existing errors.

Figuratively speaking, modern researchers of Russian Neo-Kantianism are not reconstructors and restorers, but builders of the national philosophical tradition, the formation of which has become the main task of the internal movement of this school.
