The sale of Spanish fruit and vegetables to the EU plunges 7% in the first semester

Date: July 19, 2024 Time: 01:47:40

The export of fruit and vegetables to countries of the European Union (EU) has decreased by 7% in volume during the first six months of the year, with a total of 5.2 million tons, while its value has registered 8% compared to the same period of the previous year, with 8,036 million euros. In a statement sent this Tuesday, the Spanish Federation of Associations of Exporting Producers of Fruit and Vegetables (Fepex) has argued that the behavior of exports by destination country reflects the “need to reinforce” market diversification measures.

In total, the percentage of participation of the EU in the value of Spanish exports in the first half of 2023 stood at 83% compared to 82% in the same period of 2022, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise Duties from the Tax Agency, processed by Fepex and collected by Efe. In addition, exports to third countries grew by 1% in value, standing at 1,854 million euros, with the participation of non-EU countries in the value of fruit and vegetable exports being 17% of the total.

Spanish exports to non-EU European countries amounted to 9,678 million euros, 8% more, and 6.1 million tons, a decrease of 7%. The decrease in the volume of these exports has been mainly due to the fall in the United Kingdom, which, although increased by 3% in value, will have 10% in volume due to “strong competition from third countries”, the federation has indicated.

data from non-European countries

As for non-European third countries, exports have fallen by 18% year-on-year in the first half of 2023 to 212 million euros and 37% in volume to 147,000 tons. According to Fepex, these figures represent volumes and values lower than those of the previous year and “very low” in relation to total exports, representing 2% in value and volume.

The main recipient country is Canada in the first semester, with 17,752 tons, 53% less; They are followed by Brazil, with 14,449 tons, 13% less, and the United Arab Emirates, with 10,275 tons, 54% less.
