More time was needed due to the high level of voter activity, which took place in the evening, when the heat of the day had subsided. According to the Mehr agency, those present at the polling stations were given the opportunity to vote even after the allotted time had elapsed.
According to the head of Iran’s electoral commission, Mohsen Eslami, turnout exceeded 40 percent, higher than in the first round of voting.
The counting of votes has already begun in the republic. It is expected that it will become clear on Saturday morning who exactly will assume the presidency.
In the second round, the reformist bloc representative Masoud Pezeshkiyan and the conservative candidate Said Jalili competed for the post. In the first round, Pezeshkiyan received 42.45 percent of the votes, Jalili – 38.61 percent. However, in the second round, Jalili could receive votes from supporters of other conservatives who participated in the elections. In this regard, analysts said that the chances of the two candidates are approximately equal. The outcome of the fight will decide which of them managed to mobilize their supporters better.
